Firefox for Maemo Now Available via Ovi Store

The first final release of Firefox Mobile

Users of a Maemo-based Nokia N900 handset can enjoy on their devices a final version of Mozilla's Firefox browser for mobile phones, which was released into the wild a few weeks ago, and that can now be downloaded via the Ovi Store too. The software solution was initially available for download via Mozilla's website only, but now those interested in enjoying its features on their handsets can also get it from the application’s portal, it seems.

As most of you might already know, Espoo, Finland-based Nokia announced not too long ago that it planned on making the Ovi Store available for both its Symbian and Maemo users, and now the Firefox Mobile for Maemo browser makes its debut in the storefront, after having passed through the Ovi Store approval process. For what it's worth, this seems to be good news for Maemo fans, as Nokia is steadily moving towards making applications available for their devices too, and more of them should emerge via Ovi Store soon.

“One of the best parts of Firefox mobile is the ability to sync with your desktop or laptop browser. Using the Weave Sync plugin, you can keep create a Weave account and keep all your browers in Sync. As Jay shows off in the video below, you’ll be able to pull up pages from your history on a mobile device, which you previously browsed on your desktop,” a recent post on Nokia Conversations notes. The video in question, embedded at the bottom of this article, shows the Beta 4 flavor of Firefox, but the browser still moves impressively good, one should agree.

The Firefox browser for mobile, and, in this case, for Maemo, builds on the same capabilities as the desktop version, though it has been greatly optimized to work on handsets. It comes with a wide range of mobile-specific functions and, considering that it is only the first final release, it should add even more of them in the future. Those who haven't tried it already can do so by accessing the Ovi Store, or they can download it from Softpedia too, via this link.

As pointed out before, those who do not own a Maemo-based Nokia N900 can also try the application on their desktop computers, as it was released for Windows, Linux and Mac too.
