The iPhone pricing wars are about to get even more heated. After Radio Shack retailed the smartphone for just $25, Best Buy is preparing for a one-day promotion and is supposedly offering the 8GB iPhone 3GS for free with a two-year contract.
According to an anonymous source cited by BGR, Best Buy will retail Apple's iPhone 3GS 8GB for free for one day only, Friday, December 10th.
The new offer is available for new lines, additional lines, as well as qualified upgrades and it's rebate-free. Furthermore, it looks like the retailer has enough inventory in all its stores to support the promotion.
Launched more than a year ago through AT&T, the iPhone 3GS sales were partly hindered by the leaked rumors about the upcoming iPhone 4. Apparently, these rumors made Apple fans wait for the new device to come out instead of buying the 3GS.
However, the device is still the best alternative for customers who cannot afford to purchase the iPhone 4, as the 3GS supports most of the features of iOS 4.2.
For the non-tech savvy users, it must be mentioned that the iPhone 3GS is powered by an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor and runs iPhone OS 3 out-of-the-box, but it is upgradable to iOS 4.
It comes with a 3.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors and 320 x 480 pixels resolution. The display is covered with a scratch-resistant oleophobic surface and it features multi-touch input method, accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and proximity sensor for auto turn-off.
Other highlights of the smartphone include: HSDPA 7.2 Mbps technology, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g connectivity, 8 GB / 16GB / 32GB storage space, 256 MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP (headset support only), GPS with A-GPS support and 3-megapixel camera with autofocus, geo-tagging and video recording capabilities (VGA@30fps).
