The Godfather was meant to be a solid rival for Grand Theft Auto but, in reality, it did not achieve too much. However, even before the first game was launched, Electronic Arts started to talk about sequels, announcing that there would be a second and a third game in the series. And, even though other details were not given, we all knew it was only a matter of time until that was going to happen. And it did during an EA investors meeting.
Electronic Arts' boss John Riccitiello dropped a little but precious piece of information on the gameplay of the next Godfather title: "You can play this game both at the street level, much like a GTA-style game, but you can also play it top-down, almost like you're in an RTS, controlling the strategy of the boroughs you can see what's going on".
Which means that EA might actually be up for something really great: improving a successful format could always have as result a... hmm... an improved format which will have even more success to the public, right? Of course, GTA-like gameplay and real time strategies don't seem to have many things in common, but this is what was probably believed about first person shooters and RTSs and now we have quite a few games mixing the two genres. So, as I've said, it could be the addition able to erase the "GTA-clone" stamp on Godfather.
Even though Riccitiello said nothing about a possible release, he did mention that it's very likely to start hearing a lot about the game this fall. Which means that it would be right before Christmas and we all know how much game developers and publishers love the holidays, right? Let's just hope that this new Godfather game will make our holidays even better.
Godfather II: Play It Like a GTA Game or a RTS
A little design change planned for the next game
