South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics has reportedly unveiled the existence of the rumored LG Star Android-based device via a recent press release on its website.

Two devices were mentioned there, namely the LG Optimus Mach, also known as the LG-LU3000, which was released on the local market last week, and the Optimus 2X (LG-SU660), which is none other than the LG Star, it seems.

For the time being, however, there's no indication that the device would sport the same moniker when released on the market in other countries around the world, though it would certainly be called Optimus 2X when released in South Korea.

Unfortunately, the mobile phone maker did not unveil officially specific info on when the handset would be made available for purchase.

For those who might have not encountered the device before, we should note that it would arrive on shelves as the first dual-core device from LG, is not the first dual-core mobile phone ever.

As stated above, it should be released on shelves with Google's Android operating system on board, most probably the Android 2.3 Gingerbread version, even if it is currently based on the Android 2.2 Froyo iteration.

The handset packs an Nvidia Tegra 2 chip inside, and has already got a preview treatment from the guys over at Engadget, who seem to have been pretty impressed with the handset's performance levels.

LG's new mobile phone offers a large 4-inch display that can deliver a 800 x 480 pixel resolution, with a custom UI thrown on top of that Android OS.

It appears that the device is capable of offering increased operational speeds, and the available benchmarks should prove exactly that.

While no formal announcement on the new device was made until now, there are already a series of videos with the LG Optimus 2X (LG-SU660), aka LG Star, available for your viewing pleasure.

In some of the videos below, you can see the smartphone compared to other high-end devices on the market, including the Samsung Galaxy S, or the iPhone 4.

More videos are available at Engadget (a nice photo gallery as well) and at phandroid here.
