Apple has posted a public download link for the iOS 4.1 update / restore file targeting future owners of iPod touch fourth-generation who are yet have the device shipped to them.The fourth-generation iPod touch is currently available for pre-order, and is slated to become available next week, Apple said during its September 1 media event.
For one reason or another, the Cupertino-based electronics maker has already started offering the iOS 4.1 IPSW file which future iPod touch owners will need to restore to a fresh copy of the firmware.
The file iPod4,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw is available for free download using this public link offered up by Apple.
For avid downloaders of Apple iOS software updates, it is worth noting that the company has made the IPSW file icon completely colorless.
The iOS 4.1 Software Update is the first major update to iOS 4. It brings Game Center, new iTunes features, high dynamic range (HDR) photography, HD video uploads, and more.

Apple has announced that, on September 8, iOS 4.1 will be available to all supported devices - iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, the second-, third-, and the fourth-generation iPod touch.
The new iPod touch is packed with an array of new features, including Apple's Retina Display, FaceTime video calling, HD video recording, the A4 chip found in the iPhone 4, and a 3-axis gyroscope.
All this is crammed inside “the thinnest and lightest iPod touch ever,” which features up to 40 hours of music playback and seven hours of video playback on a single battery charge, according to the makers of the device.
In addition to delivering new functionality to iOS device owners, the 4.1 software update is also tasked with fixing a number of issues, including a problem with the iPhone 4 proximity sensor, and poor performance with iPhone 3G handsets.
